The ELI Team is very pleased to announce the launch of its new video workshop. It was written to meet the English needs of KS3 Geographers but, of course, its activities are available for everyone.

Earth's surface activity - quick to very, very slow

There are twelve videos ranging from weathering, river and ice erosion, transportation and deposition, identifying rocks, evolution of life through time, quick to very slow processes and ending with brickquake and party poppers.

The powerpoint guides you through the various stages and everything, including the resources list, can be found in the workshop booklet - - in other words, everything you need to inspire the next generation of geographers!

Virtual Rock Kit for those stuck at home

Are you stuck at home?
No rock specimens to examine?
Try using our

VIRTUAL ROCK KIT.

You can now view sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks as they appear in the landscape, in hand specimen. under hand lens magnification, in thin section and even in use. The thin sections can be viewed with plane polars or cross polars.
Once you know your rocks, you can try many of the Earthlearningidea activities or watch some of our new videos. The latter show all aspects of the dynamic rock cycle so your knowledge of the rocks from the virtual rock kit will be put to good use. You could try collecting some small pieces of your local rocks as you exercise and then identify them.

3 million downloads / ELI translations

3 million activity downloads!

The ELI team is delighted to announce that by the end of March 2017, there have been 3 million activity downloads. We should like to thank all the volunteers involved in this project, especially all of our translators and, of course, all of our users. Hopefully lots of pupils have enjoyed trying out the ideas in Earth science or geography lessons.

To all Educators:
One of our German translators who teaches in a University of Education recommends that other educators follow his example and ask their university students to translate one Earthlearningidea and present it to the other students as part of their course. These translations are then checked and finally added to the website.

Japanese translations
Our Japanese colleagues have added 32 translations to the site; incredible. Many, many thanks.

Major upgrade to Earthlearningidea website

Because we now have so many activities, teachers' ideas and video clips on the website, we have been developing better ways of searching for what you want.
The Search engine has been re-written and is now fast and accurate.
We have also re-written the alphabetical index. All activities are now 'clickable' from here and any teachers' ideas (extensions) and video clips are included.
A sample is shown below; please try it out on the website.

Please report any problems to us at info@earthlearningidea.com

Teaching strategies and Fun sessions

We have added new pages to our website -

TEACHING STRATEGIES - we know this page does not look very exciting but it lists activities teachers could use if they are teaching any of the topics mentioned. As we have so many activities on the site now, we thought it might be useful for teachers to be able to find quickly suitable activities for a particular topic. Please have a look at the list and let us know what you think either by comment on this post or by email. Also, if you have ideas for other topics, please let us know.

CHILDREN'S FUN SESSIONS - this page lists fun activities for children to do on special science days, in museum sessions, on open days or at any time when they want to have fun and learn something too. Any comments or suggestions about these will be gratefully received too.

Incorrect links

For a reason unknown to us at the moment, any link beyond the Earthlearningidea home page is not working. If you require, or already have, links to the pdfs, please go to the ELI home page and use the search facilities from there.
Our next ELI is 'Take it or leave it? - the geoconservation debate. This will be published next Tuesday, 13th March.

Earthlearningidea in 2011

Earthlearningidea has continued to grow in 2011. In March we published our 100th activity with "'Crystallisation' in a pudding dish" and in October the number of downloads of our activities passed half a million. Also in 2011, our activities started to be translated into Portuguese and German. We shall continue to publish a new activity every two weeks throughout 2012.
For this last post of the year, the Earthlearningidea team would like to thank all the people who have made these achievements possible.
Thank you!
